Changing Tab size in Firefox

After the release of Firefox 4 exactly 13 months ago, Mozilla updated few things with respect to User interface and its customization. I was put off by the tab width immediately after the upgrade and I couldn’t help but install an extension to reduce it to my liking. However, there is a much simpler alternative which one can use and avoid installing one extension. What needs to be done:

  1. Enter about:support in the address bar. Click “Show Folder” button
  2. Create a directory called “chrome” and create a file called userChrome.css
  3. Paste the following code to reduce the size of the tab to how it was in Firefox 3.

.tabbrowser-tab[fadein]:not([pinned]) {
   min-width: 0px !important;
   max-width: 140px !important;
}

Tada!

Weird connection timeout error in OSX Lion

I got myself a TP Link router (for a 1000 bucks) and configured my Hathway broadband connection appropriately. Everything was working fine (iPod, iPhone etc), but not my MacBook pro! Whenever I selected the connection, I got “Connection Time out” error. Thanks to one solution online at macrumors forum, I am now able to connect to the internet :-). You’ve to add the desired WiFi network (Network Preferences -> WiFi -> Advanced button) by clicking + sign and choose WPA/WPA2 Personal as security. Enter an incorrect password, click OK and click Apply. Try to connect to the network and sure enough, the password screen appears and enter the correct password now.

Finally, England won

After a horrid tour in UAE and a poor start in Sri Lanka, England has finally won a test. Kevin Pietersen delivers it when it mattered. Good outing for him as well, after 3-0 drubbing against Pakistan in UAE. Thanks to this win, England retain their No.1 ranking.

WrestleMania 28 is over. What’s next?

Ultra exiting event with few dud matches and silly promos. WrestleMania may or may not have lived up to its expectations, but it was a fun 4 hour show. So now that HHH, Undertaker and Rock have ‘unofficially’ retired from the ring, what is next in line?

1. Lord Tensai (Prince Albert) is going to make his debut soon.
2. Cena is now going to sell green colored crap (t-shirt,armband, wristband)
3. Daniel bryan’s title run meant nothing after losing to Sheamus in 18secs. He’ll probably be made fun of that for the whole year.. he might even win a slammy this december.
4. Punk had a good feud with Jericho. Stone cold Steve austin at WM 29?

A Tied series

West Indies lost the final match of a gripping ODI series, but they have shown their potential by not losing the series. If only the third match was won by them instead of being tied. Keiron Pollard and Darren Sammy emerge as two match winners, while Sunil Narine is still a mystery. Let’s see what he can do at the IPL. (Of course I won’t watch it)

Gnome Classic for the win!

Ubuntu 12.04 doesn’t ship with GNOME 2 with the 2 panel layout. But users will be pleased to know that they need to just install one package from the software center.

Open software center, search for gnome-panel  and install. Log out, select Gnome Classic from the login screen and enjoy.

What’s next?

So a decade ago, Steve jobs unveiled the iPod to a lot of oohs and aahs. Then the iPhone, MacBook Air and then the iPad. One thing which was really common was the diminishing form factor. Yet, the battery life was perfect as long as it is an Apple product. iPad has undergone three revisions now and the battery life is impressive as ever. What is next in line for the iPhone? Lot of concept videos can be seen in Youtube, but they all miss out on one point. It doesn’t really matter how the iPhone looks, rather how much battery it drains. My prediction for the next heavyweight Apple event is an iPhone with better battery life. Moving on to LTE technology (India won’t get it soon), the battery life is going to make a big impact.

iPhone 5 or if Tim decides to drop the numeral from it (Like with the iPod and iPad), ‘The new iPhone’ will have better battery life, which brings us to an interesting question. How big the battery should be? How big is ‘big’? Will we see a breakthrough innovation in the reduction in the size of battery and yet derive more power? One has to only wait and watch.

Firefox 11 and SPDY

For a while now, the good folks behind Chromium have been developing SPDY protocol which works on top of HTTP to render contents faster. Firefox 11 (yes, it’s out) has this option, but it is not enabled by default. Just enter about:config and type the following in the filter network.http.spdy.enabled and set it to true. People who are using Kindle Fire might recognize it, since their connection to EC2 instances are super fast. Although the feature is available, not many websites offer SPDY services. Twitter, Gmail etc are the few to deploy SPDY thus far. Hit source to know more.
